Ergonomic lighting

Zoned light for rooms where work happens on screens.

Ergonomic lighting is a zoned, coloured and white light for operating and examination rooms. It minimises glare on screens, increases contrast and detail, and reduces eye strain for staff, without switching off the light in the room.

In a modern operating and examination theatre, many procedures today are carried out via screen work. The surgeon performs the minimally invasive procedure, while the anaesthetist monitors and keeps watch over the patient, and the nurse assists during the operation. Three different visual tasks in the same room — which a single static, white ceiling light cannot support.

Ergonomic lighting solves this by dividing the room into light zones. Each zone has its own colour, intensity and direction, matched to the task taking place there. The zones form part of a coherent light design where they work together rather than compete.

The light is pre-programmed for the actual workflows in the room: cleaning, preparation, patient handling and the individual procedures. Optimal illumination is always only one press away.

The effect is not just comfort. Better lighting conditions at screen-based workstations measurably improve precision and lower error rates.

Minimises reflections and glare

Zoned coloured light ensures images on screens appear clear and distinct, without glare from ceiling luminaires or bright surfaces.

Reduces eye strain

The light in each zone supports vision, so staff do not have to strain to see properly. Fewer instances of headache and tired eyes through long procedures.

Optimises image quality

With the right light behind and in front of the screen, contrasts stand out clearly. The image becomes sharper and easier to read.

Increases detail and precision

A sharper image makes it easier to see nuances and details, which in turn increases clinical precision.

Improves concentration

When the eye is less strained, concentration can be sustained for longer. Staff are less tired at the end of the working day.

Strengthens patient safety

By optimising the screen image and removing reflections, the risk of errors during the procedure is reduced.

The light follows the phases of the procedure. One press switches the entire room configuration without manual adjustment mid-procedure.

Three phases of operating room lighting: warm light before, zoned coloured light during, bright white light after
Before

Warm light that calms the patient ahead of the procedure and creates a reassuring environment in an otherwise clinical room.

During

Zoned coloured light matched to the procedure. Minimises glare and optimises the screen image for all professional groups simultaneously.

After

Bright white light for completion, cleaning and preparation for the next procedure.

Ergonomic light design rests on six parameters. All of them must be right before the effect materialises. It is not a matter of picking a colour.

Room conditions

All physical conditions in the room are taken into account, reflective surfaces, windows and equipment placement, to avoid unintended disturbances in screen work.

Balance against the screen

The room's light levels are balanced against the light from the screen, so the screen image appears clear and is easy to read for the surgeon.

Contrast damping

Broad-spectrum, desaturated colours dampen the environment behind the screen and increase focus on the image itself. At the same time the eye muscles are allowed to relax.

Simultaneous contrast

The background colour is fine-tuned relative to the colours in the screen image, so details appear sharper than in ordinary white light or in darkness.

Complementary colours

Complementary colours establish a room illumination that is balanced and calming. Essential for a quiet visual working environment during long procedures.

The light behind the surgeon

The light behind the surgeon matches the colours to be highlighted in the screen image. All blue light is removed because it can cause reflections and lack of clarity in the screen image.

The colour choice is not aesthetic. Each colour solves a specific optical problem relating to the procedure and the image material being worked with.

Green and red light

For laparoscopic, endoscopic and radiological procedures. Broad-spectrum green and red reduce glare and increase contrast in the coloured screen image.

Magenta light

For greyscale images such as X-ray and ultrasound. Magenta optimises reading of the greyscale without compromising visual comfort.

Warm light

Calms the patient before and after the procedure. Creates reassurance in an environment that can otherwise feel foreign and clinical.

Bright white light

For open surgery, cleaning and preparation. High colour rendering ensures correct tissue assessment and precise work in the sterile field.

Ergonomic lighting can be installed to advantage in any room where work happens on screens, or where different professional groups have differing lighting needs in the same space.

Surgery

  • Delivery rooms

We deliver both for renovation of individual rooms and for entire departments in larger new-build projects.

One press

Pre-programmed light settings are operated from a wall panel or from a touchscreen in the sterile field. Icons and labels are adapted to the room's procedures.

Ceiling-mounted

Luminaires are installed directly in the ceiling or as a recessed solution, positioned for optimal light distribution. They require no separate cleaning.

Reprogrammable

If the room changes character or new procedures are introduced, the light settings can be reprogrammed without physical alterations.

We are involved throughout, from the first needs assessment to fine-tuning after handover and ongoing service.

01

Needs assessment and advice

We map the room's procedures, the working positions of each professional group and the screens being used.

02

Technical design

Zone design, lighting calculations and luminaire selection in collaboration with consultants and contractors.

03

Integration

We ensure the lighting works with the room's other technical systems and control interfaces.

04

Installation and commissioning

Installation, connection, technical review and start-up.

05

Programming and calibration

Light scenarios are programmed per zone and phase. We measure and document that the system performs as designed.

06

Training and handover

Staff and technical department are trained in operation and daily use.

07

Follow-up and service

We follow up, fine-tune the scenarios and provide service throughout the system's lifetime.
